It’s time to enter a travel photography competition – and you might win an African photo safari

If travel is your thing – and if you’re reading this, it probably is – and you’re a strong photographer, there’s an exciting new photo competition you might want to enter. One of our experiential travel brands, Penda Photo Tours has launched the first of what will be an annual Travel Photography Competition. This year the main winner will get to venture to Botswana for an exclusive photography safari – and there are some other prizes, too.

The Art of Photography Travel

Photography travel is increasingly popular. It’s a form of travel where photography isn’t just a happy offshoot of a trip – it’s the main act. If you join a photo tour or photo safari, your itinerary will be entirely built around the best possible photographic opportunities. You’ll be sure to get to that right spot, at the right time of day, with the right angles, to get that perfect shot. These trips are guided by professional photographers who provide tutoring along the way, so that you can hone your craft and make the most out of the experience. (And you don’t need to be an advanced photographer to join a photo tour – many trips are perfectly suitable for beginners.)

However, you obviously don’t need to join a photo tour to take stunning photographs during your travels. And if you’ve produced some great images of your own, you may as well see if they can score you some recognition – and potentially a great prize.

The Competition; How it Works

The competition has three categories; wildlife, landscape, and culture. What you enter, and how many images you enter, is entirely up to you. Your first entry is free, and after that, you can enter ten extra images for $10. (A portion of proceeds go to two conservation charities based in Zimbabwe.) Divide them between categories, or just focus on one category – whatever floats your photographic boat. Entries close December 20th, 2024.

The images will be judged by an impressive panel of photographers, including National Geographic photographer Tyrone Turner, multi-award-winning photographer Lucia Griggi, and photojournalist and former White House photographer Susan Sterner. They’ll pick winners and runners up in each category, and names will be announced on January 20th.

Which leads us to arguably the best part – the prizes. There will be one overall winner, who gets to join Penda’s photo safari in Botswana next year. It’s an exclusive safari, based in the somewhat undiscovered Tuli Block region – an area described by Lonely Planet as ‘Botswana’s best kept secret.’ It’s a stunning wilderness dotted with wildlife, including big cats and humongous herds of elephants. You’ll be guided by professional wildlife photographer Alan Hewitt, who will offer workshops throughout the trip. It’s a small-group trip, with a maximum of six guests, so everyone can learn at their own pace and level.

The other two category winners will receive a camera backpack by Vincov, and all three category runners up will get vintage style camera straps, also by Vincov.

If this has encouraged you to enter, or you’d like to read through all the details, just mosey on over to the competition page. Good luck!
